Service records of the 57th Alabama provide the following:

Columbus J. L. Cunningham. Appointed Major April 13, 1863. Promoted Colonel [February 1, 1864,] to rank December 26, 1863. Wounded at Franklin, Tennessee, November 30, 1864.

Willis Brewer says he was from Pike County, which I believe Homer Jones can verify.

Capt. James Cunningham's company, the "Shorter Dragoons", organized at Burnt Corn, Monroe County, Alabama, on March 29, 1862. It became Co. "I", 2nd Alabama cavalry Regiment. Members mustered at Montgomery, Alabama, April 21, 1862. Capt. Cunningham was promoted Lieeutenant Colonel when the regiment organized [June 2,] 1862, to rank May 1, 1862. He resigned on May 27, 1863, citing friction between himself and other members of the regiment.
