Kathy,

John T. Brown served in the Marianna Dragoons, raised in Marianna, FL. In about 1907, he was Commander of the Bartow Camp, United Confederate Veterans, in Pine Hill, AL. Dr. Bob McLendon has a picture of him with this info on it. He said his father searched for his grave and located it, but he didn't know where, except that it was difficult to locate. He thinks it was either in Pine Hill or in Evergreen, which for some reason sticks in his mind. The only Evergreen I know of is in Conecuh Co. There is a Pine Hill in west Wilcox Co., and one in north Randolph Co. He left the Gordon community apparently long before he died. "Fancy John" was also known as Judge Brown, as he was a some kind of a Judge. The story is that when Confederate veterans would buy watches, etc. from Yankee mail order houses, and not pay for them, the seller would contact him to collect. He would always tell them that the veteran died, and "buried him with the watch on him." A CS vet never had to pay a Yankee mail order house while he was a Judge.....just a story, maybe true, maybe not.
