Roger,

This may be of help:

I have 45 James Gilliand listings, but only one James from Al. He was in Co. G 28th Al Infan. pvt. I don't think is the one you are looking for.

One J. A. Gilliland is found in Co A 58 Al. INf. pvt. as well as one W. V. Gilland, pvt. Co A. 58th Infan. and one E. B. Gilliland pvt. Co. A. 58th Infan. The initials fit and they are in the same unit. There is one E. F. Gilliland in the same unit.

It was not uncommon for these soldiers to move to different units. A Wiliam V. and one E. B. listing and Eli(possibly the same person as E. B.) are in the 18th Al. Inf. These last three (William V.; E.B.; and Eli) were musicians, fifers.

I have several other Gilliland listings, but I will bet this will be a good start. Get their Compiled service records. These records can be found at the Archives in Montgomry or any Major Library in Al. B'Ham for sure. or at major universities.

Dont forget to look at their pension applications, which can only be obtained at the State Archives in Montgomery

Good luck
