In appreciation of their sacrifice, here are a few of the Alabama men who were injured, captured, or killed at Gettysburg. All were joined Pickens County raised companies or were residents of Pickens County, Ala. at some time durng their lives.

5th Ala. Inf. Regt.

GATES, John L., Company C Pickensville Blues and New Company H
Wounded 7/2/1863 at Gettysburg. Captured and held POW. Paroled. Returned to duty. Wounded 7/1/1864 near Richmond. Returned home as permanently disabled. Died 9/8/1866.

WATSON, Joseph F. , Company C Pickensville Blues
Captured at Gettysburg 7/2/1863 and was held prisoner until 2/14/1865. 1865. Living in Brewton, Ala. after the war.

KEATING [KEETING], John Thomas, New Company H
Captured and released at least three times, including capture at Gettysburg on 7/3/1863. Living in Reform after the war. Died 1915. Buried at Arbor Springs.)

VAIL, Jacob W., Company E
Enlisted at Antioch Church in Pickens Co. on 3/24/1862. Wounded and captured at Gettysburg. Died as a Prisoner of War at Ft. Delaware.

VAIL, John Calvin Capp, Company E
Enlisted at Antioch Church in Pickens Co. on 3/24/1862. Wounded and captured at Gettysburg 7/2/1863. Died as a Prisoner of War at Ft. Delaware on 1/27/1865 or 2/23/1865.

11th Ala. Inf. Regt.

ACKER, Samuel M., Company H Pickens County Guards/Pickens County Rifles
Died 5/3/1863 at Gettysburg.

FUNDERBURK, Jacob Joshua, Company H Pickens County Guards/Pickens County Rifles
Captured Gettysburg, 7/3/1863. Apparently captured again at the Battle of the Wilderness. Held POW at Fort Delaware. Paroled on 9/15/1864. Died 1/25/1908 at age 77. Buried at Mineral Springs Cemetery in Pickens Co.

SHELTON, Rufus H. "Dick, 2nd Sgt., promoted to 2nd Lt., Company I Pineridge Company/Fayette and Pickens Rifles
Wounded at Gaines Mill. Severely wounded at Gettysburg on 7/2/1863. Transferred to an unidentified cavalry unit in July 1864.

Misc. Units

ADAMS, Sanford M.
Enlisted with the 12th Ala. Inf., Co. K. Wounded at Gettysburg 7/1/1863. Lost right arm as a result of those wounds. Living in Pickens Co. in 1884.

MALONE [MELLOWN], David Ewing,1st Sgt
Born 12/4/1841 at Reform in Pickens Co. Enlisted as a Private in July 1861 at Tuscumbia in the 26th Ala Reg., Co. K [formed in Fayette Co.]. Captured at Gettysburg 7/1/1863. Imprisoned until the end of the war at Ft. Delaware. Exchanged and admitted to 2nd Alabama Hospital on 1/3/1864. Living at York in Sumter Co. after the wars end.

MALONE, Samuel S.
Born 8/31/1842 in Pickens Co. Enlisted as a Private in the 26th Ala. Inf., Co. K. Captured at Gettysburg 7/1-3/1863. Sent to Fort Delaware. Exchanged 10/30/1863. Admitted to CSA Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. Transferred to Lynchburg, Va. on 12/3/1863. Discharged from service. Re-enlisted in Harrison's Co. in Selma, Ala. in March, 1865. Living in Coaling, Tuscaloosa Co. in 1907.

Sanders, John Caldwell Calhoun, Brigadier General
He first enlisted with the 11th Alabama Infantry, Company C Confederate Guards, and was elected Captain of his company. Severely wounded at Frasiers Farm on June 30, 1862. Wounded Battle of Antietam. Seriously wounded at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, taking a miniball to the knee. Bleed to death from arterial wounds in both legs received at Welson Rairoad engagement on 8/21/8164.

SANDERS, Robert Deale
Born 1839-43 in Pickens Co. Regiment unknown. [Probably in the 11th Miss. Inf., Co. F.] Died 7/3/1863 at Gettysburg.

SHELTON, Saul B.
Enlisted as a Private with the 26th Ala. Inf., Co. K (Fayette County). Captured at Gettysburg on 7/1/1863. Sent to Fort Delaware. Signed Oath of Allegiance with residence listed as Pickens Co., Alabama, and was released on 6/14/1865.
