That is a good illustration of how incomplete the indexes can be. I almost never found my great-grandfather in the 1880 census, because he is not shown in the index even though he was a head-of-household. I finally found him by accident.

I found James Throckmorton, also, in the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Franklin and Colbert, respectively.

In 1860 James Throgmorton [sic] is on page 649, Eastern Subdivision.

In 1870, he is shown as age 60, born in N.J., on page 52. Louisa, age 16, born in Ala. is also on that page. Creg Thorgmorton is shown on page 159, age 24, born in Ala. with Annie, age 20, and born in Ala.

The Throckmortons/Throgmortons were not located in the early land records.
