A lathe from Selma rests on a pedestal next to Samford Hall at Auburn University. The legend provides a history of the lathe, mentioning that it was removed to the Elyton area and buried near Col. McIwaine's furnaces at Irondale. I've often wondered at the effort required to transport this huge machine over such a distance, as well as the efforts to bury and 'exhume' it. I don't recall a date for its removal from Selma, but would have to assume this took place in the winter of 1864-65.
