Ft. Gaines surrender

Davis was not alone in his dismay. Don't have the exact time-line but Ft. Gaines surrendered quite quickly and not yet under serious threat. The occupants of Ft. Morgan, just across the mouth of the bay, were outraged and felt betrayed as they were under greater pressure from land and sea.

It cannot be seen today as only the older, brick portions of the forts remain, but in some minds, Ft. Gaines, though smaller, was the better fort as it had more extensive earthworks. By this time in the war, gun technology had rendered brick forts more hazardous to the occupants than to the enemy.
