O. T. Shepard enlisted in the "Pearson Dragoons" at Camp Stone near Montgomery, Ala., Nov. 25, 1861. Officers and men were from Tallapoosa County and enlisted for three years or the war. Troops assembled at Camp Stone were organized as the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment and reported to General Johnston at Corinth MS early the following year. Led by Capt. John G. Stokes, the "Pearson Dragoons" became Co. "D" of this regiment. By the end of 1862 losses due to various causes required the original ten companies to reorganize as six companies, so O. T. Shepard's records are filed with 2nd Company "C". He was assigned duties as a bugler, and served apart from his company with General Wheeler's escort for much of the war. The last record in his file shows him absent with Wheeler's escort on March 14, 1864. No later record.

P.M. Shepard served with Co. "C", 6th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. This command was recruited under different circumstances later in the war, his company enrolling on March 1, 1863 at Troy AL. Officers and men were from Tallapoosa and Randolph Counties. His name appears with a list of men who surrendered with this command at Gainesville, AL May 14, 1865, residence shown as Dadeville, Tallapoosa County AL.

There are too many possibilities to be sure about Joseph Shepard; was he also from the Dadeville area, and do you know his age in 1860?
