J. H. Chappell enlisted in Butler Co. AL Sept, 20, 1862, in 2nd Co. "G", 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment. This company, the "Lomax Sharpshooters", organized under Capt. Malachi Ford Bonham on May 1, 1862 at Norfolk VA., members formerly belongings to 1st Co. "G", 1st Co. "H" as well as some new recruits. The regiment served in Rodes (later Battle's) Brigade and was among the better-known units of the Army of Northewrn Virginia. Private Chappell was killed at Spotsylvania Courthouse VA on May 8, 1864.
