John F. Fluker. Enlisted in a local defense company at Grove Hill Ala., Dec. 15, 1863. The company reenlisted in Confederate service on Mar. 1, 1864, also at Grove Hill, and served under Capt. Wilbur P. Barnes as Co. “B”, Lewis’ Alabama Cavalry Battalion. He appears of rolls as having overstayed his leave, Dec. 31, 1864, having gone home for another horse. It appears he returned without a horse, for he was captured with Winston’s Battery at Blakely, Ala., Apr. 9, 1865. After a few days at Ship Island, he was forwarded to New Orleans, and sent up river to Vicksburg MS on May 1, 1865. He was exchanged at Camp Townsend on the Big Black River on May 6, 1865, and returned to his old company in time to surrender at Meridian MS, May 9, 1865.

J. (James?) Fluker belonged to Co. “E”, 24th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He died in a Macon MS hospital on July 10, 1862.

William H. Fluker enlisted in the same company at Fort Morgan AL on Dec. 7, 1861. He served as a nurse in the post hospital there from Jan. 28 to Apr. 14, 1862. He may have been sick because he went home on furlough on Apr. 26, 1862, and didn’t return to his unit within the allotted time. In June 1862 he appears on roll as a nurse again, but was left sick at Lauderdale Springs MS on July 30, 1862, when the army left the area. His disease appears to have been ascites. He remained on duty with this hospital as a patient, a nurse and a cook as late as Oct. 31, 1863. At some time prior to April 1, 1864, he returned to his company, for on that date he reenlisted for the war. He was a patient in Way hospital, Meridian MS on Feb. 17, 1865, being transferred on that date to Montgomery. His malady was listed as “vena vericosa”. During April of 1865 he was captured and paroled by the 1st Brigade of Wilson’s 2nd Cavalry Division during its sweep through Alabama.

Other Flukers serving in Alabama Confederate units were:

L.H. -- Hatch’s 8th Ala. Cav.

Jabez – Co. “I”, 30th Ala. Regt.
