Contact Ken Tilley at the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History in Montgomery. Ken is working on a book on the 34th Alabama, and may be able to help you.

Those who died at Camp Douglas in Chicago were moved from their original burial site near the prison, and moved in 1866 to what is now called Oakwoods Cemetery (then called Chicago City Cemetery). They are buried in concentric circles, in unmarked graves, around a large and beautiful monument. On this monument are bronze plaques that contain the names and regiments of 4275 Confederate soldiers buried there. It is possible many more died there, but that's all the Federal government would own up to. It states the monument was erected by "Confederate veterans and liberal citizens of Chicago." I was very surprised and pleased to see that this site is very well maintained by the City of Chicago.
