Aside from men assigned to that specific duty when units were under fire, some were assigned to drive hospital wagons which belonged to the Medical Department. You usually see these asigned at the brigade or higher level after 1862. I'd expect teamsters had some experience with animals and might be disabled -- at least for a time -- for regular field service.

A note on the pension application of an ancestor who belonged to Milledge's GA Battery says he belonged to the "amber lance core". Sounds rather colorful and a bit unusual....
