An indirect ancestor, Felix Grundy McKellar, was appointed as postmaster for the 17th Alabama Infantry. How were these selections made? Was it based on skills or was it because they were too puny or timid? Were these duties colatteral or were the postmasters excluded from other duties (including combat)?
