46th Ala. Inf.

Greetings Homer,

Yes, the 46th was at Vicksburg. Our G-G-Grandfather Sgt. Jonah Green, Company K was definitely there. A 96+ year-old cousin shared a story he heard as a child from one "Lump" Treadwell (there were two Treadwell's in Co. K and I have not determined which one told this): Lump and Jonah were in the trenches together when a "confounded" Yankee hand grenade landed betwixt the two. Sgt. Jonah Green stripped off his coat, wrapped it around the grenade, and tossed it back to the Yanks. A loss of a coat, but the saving of two lives.

After Vicksburg's surrender, the 46th moved to Enterprise,
Mississippi, where it was furloughed about July 22, 1863. It was reorganized in Demopolis, Alabama and saw further service with the Army of Tennessee under Johnston and Hood.
(Hood, naturally, the less popular of these two commanders.)
The remnant of the 46th was consolidated with the 23rd and 31st Ala. Infantry Regts. for the final struggle in North Carolina. Best guess, 150 or fewer of the 46th remained to fight with the 23rd Consolidated Inf. Regt.

SHAMELESS PLUG: We are working on a history of the 46th. If anyone has pictures, diaries, or other information they could share, we would be most appreciative.
