Greetings,

Francis M. Shields
46th Ala. Inf.
Company A

Enlisted February 28, 1862 in Montgomery (now Coosa) County at Rockford by M. M. Copeland for three years or the war. Due $50.00 enlistment bonus. Died at Vicksburg, Mississippi June 16, 1863. His name appears on a Description List and Account of Pay and Clothing at Demopolis, Alabama October 27, 1863. Settlement for $121.35 was filed December 10, 1863 by Attorney J. W. Suttle. Occupation: farmer. Age 20, 5'-10" tall, fair complexion, red hair, and blue eyes.

The above info was obtained from the Compiled Service Records for the 46th Ala. Inf. Hope this is a help.

Like you, I suspect the T. M. Shields shown of the 40th Co. A as buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery is our Francis M.

If you have any family history on Compatriot Shields, we would be most interested as we are working on a history of the 46th.

Your Servant,
