Interesting information; since the 17th Alabama was a garrison regiment during much of its career, I'd guess the action in which Sgt. Newton was wounded took place in Georgia. However, there is a potential conflict here since the regimental commander nominated Milton S. Holcombe to be ensign of the 17th Alabama. That appointment was made on June 22, 1864, to rank from June 9, 1864. The regiment was ordered to north Georgia during March of 1864, and it reached Resaca GA before Sherman advanced.
