I agree that the issue of slavery was a factor, possibly the most politically popular one at the time, precipitating secession. But, slavery was not the only cause for secession, and certainly not at all the cause of the war or the reason for the prolonged promulgation of the war on the part of the government in Washington. The sole reason for the war was to deny the right of secession to "free and sovereign states" and drag the Southern states, kicking and squealing if necessary, back into the clutches of the "Union." It is no union at all that is forced upon a people. Slavery would have died peacefully of a natural death with the coming of the industrial revolution.
