"To Die in Chicago"

"To Die in Chicago" by George Levy is an unbelievably honest book about Northern incompetence and neglect in the handling of Confederate prisoners at Camp Douglas. Levy is a graduate of the University of Chicago and has served as Assistant Attorney General for Illinois, but he pulls no punches. For instance, when confronted with an abominable death rate, the camp administration merely stopped reporting them, disposing of the bodies in the lake. Beatings were regular forms of punishment as was forcing the prisoner to sit naked in the snow. No comparison to Andersonville. Douglas was hell on earth.
