North Carolina question

I have had some "relative" successes in searching and finding information about our Rencher men that served in the Civil War, (Alabama and N. Carolina) I have NOT been able to find information about the following:

William Conway Rencher is reported as a Captain in Cumberland North Carolina... no Regiment, no other "clues".
He did not die in the War. He married in 1867, and died in 1909.

His father was a politician, Gov. of territory of New Mexico, and a state representative. Could this fact have shielded young William from actual service? His brother, John G. is well documented (he served in N.C. 33rd)

I know this is related to North Carolina, but I have so enjoyed this board, I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

thanks
