Surrender of Vicksburg

Can someone tell me what happened to the Confederate troops that surrendered at Vicksburg? My great, great grandfather served with the 30th Alabama Infantry, Company C and wrote on his application for Confederate pension that he was taken prisoner at the surrender of Vicksburg, but he was captured later near Camden, South Carolina. Was there a prisoner exchange or did some of the men escape? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
