In searching for the truth numbers are often misleading. I have a chart that shows the total population of the South at 12 million in 1860. 8 million of these were white and 4 million black. Slave owners comprised only 4.8% of Southern whites, which seems like a very low figure, but averaging in the typical large family, far more whites were likely to be of slave holding families. I am careful in using this chart to promote my pro South position realizing the numbers may be skewed. I do not wish to compromise the truth to advance my beliefs. But I would like to get to the truth.
