You have hit on the two facts that makes me doubt that the 26th was formed from the 3rd Batt. Almost every man in the 26th shows that he enlisted *with* the 26th, and that was fairly early in 1861. The only explanation that I can think of is that the 3rd Batt. was an AVC unit that was offered in whole to Confederate service and renamed the 26th. This would have been unusual. Usually individual and unconnected AVC companies were formed into a regiment at some given location (often in or near Mobile), then tendered to Confederate service.
