"Rock Cut" near Tuscumbia...

General Grenville M. Dodge describes driving Confederate forces from a strong defensive position "five miles west of Tuscumbia" on April 22, 1863. Dodge used four batteries of artillery, five cavalry regiments and fourteen infantry regiments to force the position. He was able to push east to Little Bear Creek by the end of the day.

Anyone willing to take a guess at the actual site of this action in terms of modern-day geography? It would appear somewhere along modern-day Highway 72 between county road 41 and state route 247, which intersects 72 near the Pride community.

I can only account for Roddey's, Hannon's, Julian's and Baxter's Confederate cavalry in the area. Any other suggestions?
