The War Department personnel who assembled the data on Barbiere's Battalion did some great things for us. However, they made a couple of mistakes on this unit. For some reason clerks included records of both Goldsby's and Brown's mounted companies, which never were associated with this command.

Jim is exactly right about this unit. And Gaylesville certainly sounds right for this company. Here's the information on Capt. Jackson Millsaps and his company:

Company “D” of Cherokee and Calhoun Counties

Jackson Millsaps. Formerly Captain of Company “G”, 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Paroled at Mobile, Alabama, May 30, 1865.

On October 8, 1863, Millsap’s Company was serving with the supporting forces of the Conscript Bureau in Cherokee County, Alabama. It joined Barbiere's Battalion in October of 1864.

They functioned as military police during much of their existence. However, the battalion was pressed into service when Wilson's cavalry entered central Alabama, fighting the invaders from almost every hilltop between Montevallo and Selma. Most members received paroles at Talladega during mid-May of 1865.
