Alabama flags in Iowa
Tue May 22 17:17:24 2001

I spoke with Mr. William M. Johnson, the curator at the State Historical Society of Iowa, last January (2000). He sent me photos of the flag of the 31st Alabama, a beautiful 1st National. In the canton is a Christian cross, 13 stars, and the motto, "God and our Native Land," and that of the 45th Alabama, a Hardee style flag with the unit inscription and four battle honors. Both flags are in relatively good condition.
According to a booklet, "A Descriptive List of the Confederate Flags in the Possession of the State Historical Society of Iowa," published by the Society in 1918, there are 13 Confederate flags; a couple of them are unidentified and could also be Alabaman.
