Sherman's Army near New Market, Al
Mon May 21 10:30:03 2001

My ancestors who lived around the New Market are of Alabama might disagree..As Shermans army camped in the small town of Elora Alabama and did considerable damage to the cotton plantations in the area..an article stated that in many places -all that remained was dozens of huge chimneys marking the path of Shermans army. The Morgan family cemetery at Elora was supposedly the site of Sherman's Camp... (this Morgan family was connected to John Hunt Morgan's also)..Also since Robert E Lee had family in the New Market, Alabama area and often spent the night in the home of Dr. John Morgan the old Ky Doctor who came to Alabama with his father Andrew J Morgan...who ran the first saloon at Buckhorn Tavern... In searching the Robert E Lee papers I do have research which proves he did indeed have family connections in New Market and near the close of the war...visited with them...and shortly before his death. The old loghouse of Dr. Morgan was torn down in the 60's..but it was considered a mansion in it's day..located on Mountain Fork Road...which was the origional town site of New Market.(most of the old town burned and it moved across the river) The Huntville Library has a photograph of the Dr. Morgan home..it was passed down through descendants to the Mullins family..who still own the property. they tore it down to build a brick home on the site. Dr. John Morgan-Lee's family is buried at the Mount Paran Campground Cemetery in New Market. To my knowledge there has not been much published about Sherman's army and it's destruction in the Elora,Plevna and New Market Al area's. ..but the records will show..they were there..and did considerable damage....
