According to Andrew Jackson Brown's Confederate pension records, he enlisted at Oakville in November of 1863 in the 5th Alabama Cavalry, Company E. In his pension papers it mentions fighting at Moulton, along with one or two other skirmishes/battles. He surrendered at Danville, AL in 1865, along with the remainder of his unit that was not taken prisoner at Selma.
Levi W. Brown enlisted "at a camp near Moulton" in 1862 in the 5th Alabama Cavalry, Company E. Both he and Andrew were granted Confederate Veterans pensions, and after they passed away, their widows were granted widow's pensions. I have looked over the rolls of the 5th Alabama Cav at the archives and noticed that there names were not on the rosters that survived the war. I asked numerous local historians about this and I was informed that many of the records for the 5th Alabama were destroyed. Included in Levi's file is a letter from about five veterans of the 5th Alabama, including my great-great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Brown, that they wrote to the pension board to prove that Levi had served honorably during the war. Andrew was about 17 or 18 when he joined, and Levi was about 19 or 20. I would appreciate any other information that you could dig up on the 5th Ala Cav, along with the other regiments we discussed. Thanks for your time.
