YEARS ago I worked as a consultant to Gulf Telephone in Foley, living in Gulf Shores five days a week for a two-year period. While there I met a young lady whose family lived in the house you described in Spanish Fort. You cannot imagine my surprise to turn the corner and see a well-appointed suburban home sitting atop an earthwork fort! As I recall, the area was reasonably well marked and a sign on the corner described this position as the "Red Fort", defended by Lumsden's Battery.

No, I didn't ask about artifacts which may have turned up in their yard!
