He served as a Congressman from Alabama and a military court commissioner for the Army of Tennessee. Curry was appointed Lt.Col. of the reorganized 5th Alabama Cavalry, probably October 29, 1864. His appointment was confirmed on March 25, 1865. Curry was paroled at Talladega, Ala., May 16, 1865.

As one of two Alabamians having a statue in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, Curry has received attention recently because Congressman Bob Riley has introduced a measure to have J.L.M. Curry's statue replaced by one of Helen Keller.

The other Alabamian is General Joseph Wheeler.
