22nd Alabama Uniforms

There is another photo that exists of a soldier from the same company (company E from Calhoun County) of the 22nd as Irvin Owen. It is of Matthew M. Gaines. Gaines is wearing a uniform identical to the one Owen is wearing. Both are wearing dark Gray (maybe black or blue) jackets with shoulder straps and brass buttons. Such style of jackets
was prescribed for Alabama troops in the summer of 1861
(gray jackets with shoulder straps and 7 buttons down the front with gray pants) This along with the fact that both men are brandishing identical "Bowie" knives suggest that these are early war photos.

The Lieutenant's uniform in question belonged to Jeremiah Manasco of Company A of the 22nd. It is a plain gray double breasted officer's coat with the collar bars of a 1st LT. It is missing the left shoulder and sleeve from
the mortal wound Manasco received at Shiloh.

In the Alabama State Archives there is a shell jacket that was worn at the battle of Franklin in late 1864. Though
the owner's unit has not been positively identified, he is believed to have served in the 22nd. This jacket is plain gray with a 6 button front. It is made of a rough material that looks like "salt and pepper" burlap. It is a common style of jacket issued to troops in the Army of Tennesse in which the 22nd served. Caps were known to have been issued in large numbers to A.O.T. troops also. Generally the type issued to them was plain gray with a recessed crown NOT like the federal issued cap.

Hope this helps
