Don't know about the caps. I'm getting out of my "comfort" zone here. The only photo I have of a man in the 22nd shows him "hatless" http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/IrvinOwen.gif
But, generally, the Confederate soldier wore black and brown felt hats, straw hats, or virtually anything known. For the CSA issue, the forage cap was the regular item produced. And, for Alabama uniforms, the state ordered 10,000 black felt hats with brims "looped & buttoned on the left side". Whether any of these got to the 22nd, I don't know. And, early in the war, the ladies of the South seemed infatuated with havelocks -- the fascination probably didn't last too long.
