Hi, Barbara
My G-grandfather was John Holt Cummins, he was your G-grand
father's nephew, son of Samuel Lewis Cummins. At the beginning of the war, John Holt Cummins signed up in Northport/Tuscaloosa with the 41st AL; he was exempted due to his trade of being a tanner. The Confederacy was in desperate need of shoes at the time. He worked with your G-grandfather at the tannery to meet a levy imposed upon Alabama by the War Department in Richmond. John Holt Cummins was also a member of the home guard. Helping defend Tuscaloosa, he was captured by Croxton's Raiders shortly before the war ended. He was paroled by the Federals and released in mid-April of 1865. He received a civil war pension. Perhaps something similiar happened to your G-grandfather.
Do you have any details on the murder of David Cummins?
Thanks, Johnette
