James M. C. Hamilton, my great grandfather, served in the Civil War. He was from Marion County, Ala. and was 19 years old in 1865. Family lore has him and a brother returning home with their horses after the war. Fearing Bushwackers they let the horses go ahead and came by foot the next day. Anyone know what unit they served in? The 5th Ala Cavalry and 16th, 26th and 42nd Infantry had Marion county men as did the 1st Ala Cavalry (union). The horse makes me think they were in the 5th or 1st cavalry.
His young age leads me to think they were enlisted.
Have not heard from the National Archives. Thanks for any leads or help.
