A number of errors exist in commonly referenced lists of company names; this is one. Here are my notes on this company:

Company “D” of Clarke County, “Suggsville Greys”

Capt. Stephen B. Cleveland. Resigned August 30, 1861. Later served as Captain of Company “I”, Wood’s Mississippi Partisan Ranger Regiment.
Capt. Augustus R. Lankford. Promoted Captain August 30, 1861. Term of service expired on March 31, 1862. Elected Lieutenant Colonel of the 38th Alabama Infantry Regiment May 15, 1862.

Organized at Suggsville, Alabama, March 5, 1861, this company mustered at Fort Morgan, Alabama, April 1, 1861. Disbanding March 31, 1862, at Fort Pillow, Tennessee, members who reenlisted were assigned to the 32nd Alabama Infantry Regiment, but instead joined Company “I”, 38th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Note that Capt. Cleveland later served in Wirt Adams Mississippi Cavalry Regiment; this company was known as the "Clarke County Rangers". The Claiborne "Southern Champion" of March 22, 1861, mentions that the ladies of Suggsville presented the flag to the "Suggsville Greys" at a dinner a few days earlier.
