David Hubbard, Indian Affairs Comm. CSA, Lawrence County, AL
Sun Apr 29 10:31:08 2001

The Lawrence County (AL) Historical Commission is working on a possible historical marker to commemorate the life Of David Hubbard, Indian Affairs Commissioner for the Cofederate States of America. Without his knowledge of, and friendship with, various Indian chiefs, the course of the Civil War would likely have gone worse for the Confederacy. Hubbard, a near life-long resident of Lawrence County, helped keep the Indians either neutral or pro-South.
This kept the South from having to fight a two front war with Indians and Yankees. Unfortunately, his contributions seem forgotten. Am seeking any info on this War of 1812 vet, land speculator, Congreesman, lawyer, factory owner, orator, and Southern Patriot.
