By the way, there was no connection between the 27th Alabama Infantry and the the 9th Alabama Cavalry. Members of infantry regiments who had been discharged for various reasons often reenlisted in the cavalry. Capt. John C. Featherston's resignation as Captain of Co. "F", 9th Alabama Infantry, contains a note to the effect that he had tried infantry for a few years or so, and was now inclined to try cavalry for a while. His name was eventually dropped from the rolls for prolonged absence without leave.

As for Captain Roberts, his resignation was approved on June 15, 1862. At the time he was serving as Captain of Co. "H", 45th (33rd) Miss. Inf. Regt., a company made up of men from the 27th Ala. who had not been captured at Fort Donelson. His successor, Capt. William H. Word, was killed while leading this company at Perryville, KY, Oct. 8, 1862.
