Don't feel bad about not knowing what happened; I wrote a book report on George Stewart's study of Pickett's Charge as a junior in high school and still don't know as much about it as I'd like. Confederate troops assembled in the woods prior to the attack and survivors attempted to regroup there afterwards. If you watch the movie "Gettysburg", you'll have some idea about the trees being used as a sheltered assembly point. Our dentist had a Virginia ancestor who lived through this event by remaining in these woods. A Federal shell exploded nearby while he lay on the ground prior to the attack, breaking three ribs and incapacitating him.
