Mobile Advertiser & Register casulaty lists.....
Fri Apr 27 08:50:27 2001

I've not had time to sort through more than a couple of these, but the Mobile Advertiser & Register frequently printed casualty lists after major battles. Sometimes these were of units from other states, such as Mississippi. Anything to sell newspapers, I suppose.
The library in Birmingham has a copy on microfilm, and the ADAH in Montgomery has bound originals, which I used.

This particular list was published on July 6, 1862. It's also worthy of note to say that there's also a list of casulaties that were submitted with the regimental report of the battle. These are also on microfilm (seven reels) and are ordered by the state in which the engagement took place. Comparing the newspaper list to the narrative reports, it didn't take long to see that they weren't exact matches. Having the service record microfilm at hand, I compared that to a consolidated list from the news and narrative reports. It's easy to see the entries made in the service records from the narrative reports, but sometimes hospital records and death certificates tell a little different story as well.

Anyway, here's the combined list, using the newpaper, the narrative reports, and the service records. I'm not at all sure how this will look when it posts, but hope it looks okay. One day soon I will learn enough about HTML to format these kind of posts.....
