Rod McLean
4th & 7th AlabamaCavalry Units

Am trying to learn about the above two units as I search for information on an ancestor, a James Morrison Ormand (sometimes spelled "Orman") of Russellvile, AL. For ages we thought he served in Roddey's 4th, but recent information (see below, please) indicates otherwise.

"(Name of researcher) couldn't find C.S.A. service for James Morrison Ormand until he discovered that the 4th and the 7th Regiments often served together in battle. With this knowledge he discovered the name Orman, J. in 1863-65 records listed as a private in Company D of the 7th Alabama Calvary Regiment. In research about General Forrest he learned that the General ordered the 7th Regiment to march to Gainesville, Alabama, following Lee's surrender, where they surrendered their arms and were pardoned May 14, 1865."

Questions:

--- Which of the two units was most likely comprised of enlistees from Franklin County, AL?
--- Would anyone here (Mr. Pitts??) be kind enough to do lookups on the name provided? Could, for example, someone have joined the 4th, then transferred or been assigned to the 7th?

Your help in "bringing me up to speed" on these two units, as well as any research about the ancestor named, would be appreciated.
