but I will say that, in general, I don't mind seeing a little of my work utilized elsewhere. Heck, the whole reason to do anything with history is so that it won't be lost to time.

However, that use *can* be taken too far.

For example, I think it is perfectly fair (and within the law) to use the information that someone else has published on a certain person(s) within a larger work...say a whole regiment. But to copy, for your own gain, the information researched and published on the whole regiment is certainly over the line of fair use.

And, if James (or whatever party actually owns the flag) were to use the research that we provided him here for a commerical use, I think that he would be within his "rights", but it wouldn't be "right". This is more of an issue of taking advantage of people that are willing to help. I think most of us would have helped, regardless, if he had told us upfront what was going on with the flag. And, if he had simply told us what he already knew, many of those expended hours would not have been required.
