Thank you, but this IS the regiment you requested. Also, others who may wish assist you may want to know where your ancestor lived in 1860. Conecuh or Covington County?

Normally Confederate regiments were numbered by their state of origin. If an Alabama unit by this number existed, it would be called the '15th Alabama Cavalry Regiment'. No such command ever existed, however. The information you provided makes it clear that the regiment in question is the 15th Confederate Cavalry. 'Confederate' units were authorized by the War Department in Richmond and included companies from different states. In this case companies came from Florida and Alabama. Here's the summary information on that command:

15th REGIMENT CONFEDERATE VOLUNTEER CAVALRY

DISTRICT OF THE GULF

Also called the 1st Florida-Alabama Cavalry, this regiment organized at Hall’s Mills, Alabama, on September 12, 1863. The Adjutant and Inspector General recognized this command on September 24, 1863. Its components were four companies of the 3rd Florida Cavalry Battalion, four companies from Murphy’s Alabama-Florida Cavalry Battalion, and two independent companies. Usually called Maury’s Confederate Cavalry Regiment, most staff officers were carried over from the 3rd Florida Cavalry Battalion.

FYI = the reference "DAB4:1035" on my earlier post is an abbreviation for Owen's Dictionary of Alabama Biography, which indicates that Dr. Owen included information about Capt. Leigh in his compendium. It appears in volume 4, page 1035.
