Battle of Rolumus
Wed Apr 25 10:53:49 2001

This brief summary might answer your questions - there were actually to raiding parties west of Tuscaloosa - After leaving Tuscaloosa on Ap 5th - Croxton split off a platoon of 25 men under the command of Capt. Sutherland, and send them towards Columbus, MS as a diversion for his planned move to Jone's Bluff (present day Epes)to distory the Railroad link between Selam and MS. Capt. Sutherland raided through the North Pickens County area and burned the courthouse at Carrolton, before running into Confederate forces near Bridgeville. Unable to rejoin Croxton, Capt. Sutherland fled back North to Decatur leaving Croxton to fight Gen Wirt Adams CSA forces. Gen Wirt attached Croxton about 20 miles West of Northport (Rolulus area) and in a running all-day battle (in the rain) forced Croxton back to NorthPort area were he stayed for a few days before retreating back to Elyton. Gen Wirt withdrew back to Pickensville rather than pursue Croxton, apparently because Tuscaloosa had already been destroyed, and his main orders were to protect the railroads and river bridges in West Alabama.
