I’d like to welcome a noteworthy gentleman to the message board and offer a brief description of his work. R. Hugh Simmons, a member of the Board of Directors for the Fort Delaware Society, maintains a website on Finns Point National Cemetery where 2,700 of the 3,000 who died at Fort Delaware are buried. The Society purchased microfilm of all National Archives records about Fort Delaware several years ago. Names of over 33,000 prisoners of war, civilian detainees, or Union army prisoners at Fort Delaware have been extracted from these records. While the society cannot cross-reference this information with service records available at the National Archives, Mr. Simmons welcomes inquiries pertaining to this and other prisoner of war camps.

Mr. Simmons also maintains a great website on the 12th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. This should be of great interest to those of us who have ancestors who served in the Buford/Scott Brigade. The following Alabama regiments served in this brigade:

27th Alabama Infantry Regiment,
35th Alabama Infantry Regiment,
49th Alabama Infantry Regiment,
55th Alabama Infantry Regiment,
57th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Readers should not expect to see a great deal about any of these Alabama units on this website. However, because of their long association in the Buford/Scott Brigade, the history of the 12th Louisiana was much the same as the Alabama units for much of the war. I look forward to seeing his book on the 12th Louisiana when it appears in print. Also, Mr. Simmons offers an intriguing story about a flag from the brigade which fell into Federal hands during the fighting at Peachtree Creek, so check out his flag page.
