Why two paroles?
Tue Apr 24 02:53:15 2001

I have a great grandfather, Mark S. Dickinson, who has two parole cards in his microfilmed service record file. One card, not dated, from Co. D, 45 Ala, says he was paroled as M. S. Dickinson at Salisbury, NC on May 2, 1865. No rank is given, the line below his name has " 1st Corp. Co H" inserted. The other card reads M. S. Dickinson, Co. D, 1st Ala. says he appears on a roll dated near Greesboro, NC, April 28, 1865. This card has "4 [or H] Serg., Co. C, 1 Regtiment Alabama Vols." written below his name; he is shown as being "on duty at Le..... , NC." (He shows up also as M. L. Dickinson cross ref. to Mark S. Dickinson on a search at ancestry.com.)

From the map, that's some 50 miles away. I'd like to learn more about his service, but am confused as to which unit to follow. He was enlisted by Capt. E. B. Breedlove Mar, 1862, mustered in at Tuskeege, Al, April 3, 1862. Another card, from Co H, 45th Ala, has a receipt for clothing Apr 13, 1864.

Any suggestions on reading or web sites would be appreciated.
