Brigadier General, James A. Garfield was the presiding officer during Turchin's court-martial. After his reinstatement by Lincoln, he seved well at Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Atlanta. If it's any consolation to the people of Athens, a heat stroke forced him to resign his commission in October, 1864 and he died in 1901 in an insane asylum in Anna, Illinois.

Gen. Ormsby O. Mitchell was the local commanding general and was also court-martialed for Turchin's behavior with an additional charge of engaging in the cotton trade for his own profit. He resigned his command in North Alabama on July 2, 1862 and eventaully was given a local command at Hilton Head, S.C. He died there of yellow fever within a few months of his arrival.
