"Died at sea"

First, he may have been one of the approximately 3,400 soldiers who were taken from Fort Blakely as prisoners of war to Ship Island, and died on the ocean in transit.
Second, he may have been one of the approximately 200 that escaped via the waterways near the fort. I do not know where these men went, but out to sea is certainly a possibility.
It is not likely, but possible, that his death at sea was the result of escape from Spanish Fort. The Confederates escaped Spanish Fort by river boats to Mobile.
It is also not likely that he died at sea escaping from the City of Mobile. As far as I know, that retreat from the city was completely by land, with the intent of joing the Army of Tennessee.
