Hi-

Would like to converse with anyone who has information on the 1st Mobile Volunteer Guard Infantry (also known as the City Battalion).

Here's what I've got...

Organized in 1863, this regiment defended Mobile and her Forts in both 1864 with Lt. Col. Stewart W. Cayce & 1865 with Maj. William Hartwell. They were part of Col. T.H. Taylor's command during the District of the Gulf Campaign & ordered disbanded by Richmond headquarters on Jan. 25, 1865. Since they (supposedly) did fight in the 1865 defense of Mobile, I am unsure if Gen. Maury disobeyed the order to disband them, or if they reorganized into another unit.

My ancestor, Lawrence (or L.P.) Holley fought in this company and was listed as "dying at sea" at the end of the war. What does this mean? Where did this troop fight? Does anyone have access to MIA, POW or death records for this troop?

Many thanks in advance. Please feel free to email me directly.
