A couple of points, though --

There is no Roman military tradition of designating units with letters. Legions, cohorts, and other military units were designated by a number, often with a descriptive or honorific title appended; e.g., Legio I Augusta.

Second, the American military itself states that the tradition of excluding the letter "J" derived from the necessity of avoiding confusion in written orders, due to the similarity of the cursive "I" and "J".
