Roman tradition?

I learned from an exchange student that there is no "J" in the Italian language. "Gi..." provides the "J" sound. The absence of Company J could date back to the Roman Legions. I don't know.
In the USMC, I was told that since the phonetic spelling for "J" is "Juliet", the service would not want to name a company for a lady. This is a good, tongue-in-cheek explanation for modern times but it doesn't fit the days of telegraph.
There may be something to the Roman link.
