The Confederate dead at Culpeper
Fri Apr 20 21:27:36 2001

I posted a message the other day about the Confederate dead at Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper, Virginia ans said I would follow up on the source. Some of the casualties from First Manassas who were transferred to the hospital at Culpeper and later died were buried at the hospital and later exhumed and reburied at Fairview. There were 567 dead and are listed on a roster, with a detailed description of each (some including details from their service records, the nature of their wounds and illness, physical characteristics of the soldier, settlement claims which were paid, as well as rank and units, date of death, etc). They are listed in a book I have called: A Death Roster of the Confederate General Hospital at Culpeper, Virginia, Compiled by Robert A. Hodge, Fredericksburg, Va., 1977. 55 of the dead represented here are from Alabama. The Surgeon's report was from July, 1861 through February, 1862 and for September and October, 1862. They are part of an unpublished (as of 1977) holding of the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
